“Differentiation in the classroom is not just about individualizing education; it’s about truly understanding each student’s strengths and weaknesses and tailoring our approaches to meet them where they are.” —Dr. Lisa Joyner
Part One
Supporting students with special needs is often an area that is lacking in Christian school environments — whether it be for lack of space or funding, or most often, for lack of credentialed personnel and a solid, research-based plan. On this episode of the Teacher Edition podcast, Jenny Copeland and special education expert Dr. Lisa Joyner talk about the ways Christian schools can come alongside and support students who are struggling — including identifying these students, knowing legal expectations, and finding personnel to support these types of programs.
Lisa answers these important questions:
- What is special education?
- How can Christian schools support students with special needs?
- Does including students with disabilities hold back other students in the class?
Jenny and Lisa lay the foundation of the intersection of Christian education and special education. In the next episode, they will talk about identifying students who are struggling, training for teachers, and how schools can navigate and improve their hospitality with the students and their families. Every day in the classroom is YOUR day to impact and inspire through God’s power and grace working in you.
Go do what God has called you to do!

I love it! I am in a Christian school that is meeting the needs of students with specific learning needs. The last Christian school I worked in did not even accept students with any special needs. It was not reflective of God’s view of man made in HIS image.
